Announced additions to the game include the ability to design and share tracks and a new emphasis on vehicular combat. Ridge Racer Unbounded offers a number of changes that depart from traditional Ridge Racer gameplay. Had it succeeded in sales, there would've been a sequel.

Up to the release of the game, Bugbear has been trying to add as much content as possible, as a result of the aforementioned games failing. However, upon seeing Blur and Split/Second bomb sales wise despite critical acclaim, Bugbear felt it would be too difficult to launch a new IP and instead accepted Namco's request to attach the Ridge Racer name to the title. It wasn't really meant to be related to Ridge Racer.
You can't blame Namco for its enthusiasm, though, and elsewhere it's proved the point that 3D's a perfect match for the requirements of a racing game.Ridge Racer Unbounded started off as an unrelated prototype for what would've been a new IP by Bugbear. Indeed, some of the 3D effects seem pulled from William Castle's own book of tricks – ticker tape streams from the stands lining the bayside before slapping itself against the camera, while elsewhere autumnal leaves will hurl themselves towards the player. It's quite a spectacle, and even if you think you've seen it all in Ridge Racer's universe there are still moments of unexpected beauty that can catch you unawares, whether that's in shards of light that cascade through a cliff-face or a puddle that mottles the screen with water. THE 3D EFFECT Ridge Racer's world of perfectly sculpted concrete, neon cityscapes and colourful seaside jaunts really pops on the 3DS, and it does so with a frame-rate that falters only when the top tier machinery arrives - and even then such drops are forgivingly fleeting. Combined with local play for up to four players and it certainly ticks all the boxes, if doing so without any particular flair. Namco have found other ways to make the most of the 3DS's new features, and Ridge Racer 3D does a fair job of integrating StreetPass with a feature that downloads ghosts of fellow players in the background. It's not the prettiest of games, but it's got an eye for a decent spectacle. It's here that the game truly comes into its own, demanding millimeter perfect whips of the analogue nub, and while its handsome graphics don't put the hardware inside the machine to the test it certainly puts the plastic through its paces. After a pedestrian introduction the speed then gets pleasingly ludicrous and winning is no longer the default. And a grind it is, for the first few hours at least, as Ridge Racer 3D doesn't really put up much of a fight until the second category cars arrive.
It's simple stuff, but it provides a neat thread through the reams of content that's there to be grinded through. Straddling each of these modes is a credit system whereby currency earned in races can be traded for new cars or new nitrous load-outs. An epic Grand Prix tour provides Ridge Racer 3D's single-player backbone, and it's backed up by a more bite-sized Quick Tour as well as the standard extras such as Time Attack and single races. Play It's likely that you've worked out by now whether Ridge Racer's gameplay is for you or not, but to the 3DS version's credit it's as good an exponent of Namco's eccentric craft as any, and it's served up generously.
